A Concise Guru Yoga
for my Sublime Father, Karma Urgyen Tsewang Chokdrup Pelbar1
ཨཱཿ བླ་མ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །
ah, lama khyen no
Āḥ Guru, watch over me!
ཡབ་རྗེ་ཨོ་རྒྱན་ཚེ་དབང་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །
yapjé orgyen tsewang khyen no
Sublime father, Urgyen Tsewang,2 watch over me!
རྟོགས་པས་བདག་རྒྱུད་གྲོལ་བར་མཛོད་ཅིག །
tokpé dak gyü drölwar dzö chik
Help me, that gaining realization I may be freed!
ཆོས་དབང་ཡང་སྤྲུལ་ཡབ་རྗེ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །
chöwang yangtrül yapjé khyen no
Re-emanation of Chöwang,3 sublime father, watch over me!
ཐུགས་རྗེས་གཞན་རྒྱུད་གྲོལ་བར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས་ཤིག །
tukjé zhen gyü drölwar jin gyi lop shik
Bestow blessings, that through wisdom-capacity others may be freed!
ལྷ་ལུང་དཔལ་རྡོར་ཡང་སྤྲུལ་ཨོ་རྒྱན་མཁྱེན། །
lhalung peldor yang trül orgyen khyen
Re-emanation of Lhalung Peldor,4 Uḍḍiyana, watch over me!
ཁྲེག་ཆོད་ངོ་སྤྲད་ཐག་བཅད་གདེང་གྲོལ་བཅའ། །
trekchö ngotré tak ché deng dröl cha
May I decisively recognize cutting-through, decide on the one point, and gain confidence in liberation!
གཏེར་ཆེན་དངོས་སྣང་ཨོ་ཌཱི་ཡ་ན་མཁྱེན། །
terchen ngönang odiyana khyen
Manifestation of the great treasure revealer, Uḍḍiyāna, watch over me!
ཐོད་རྒལ་སྣང་བཞི་མཐར་ཕྱིན་ཆོས་ཉིད་ཟད་སར་འཁྱོལ། །
tögel nang zhi tarchin chönyi zé sar khyöl
May I complete the four visions of direct-crossing, and reach the exhaustion of dharmatā!
བླ་མ་རྒྱང་འབོད།
Calling the Guru From Afar
དོན་བརྒྱུད་རྟོགས་པའི་རིག་རྩལ་དབང་ཆེན་དེ་བསྐུར་དུས། །
dön gyü tokpé rik tsel wang chen dé kur dü
As you bestowed the grand empowerment of awareness’ expression, the ultimate transmission,
དགོངས་བརྒྱུད་ཐུགས་རྗེའི་བྱིན་རླབས་སྙིང་དབུས་སུ་ཐིམ་སོང་། །
gong gyü tukjé jinlap nying ü su tim song
the compassionate blessings of the wisdom transmission suffused my heart.
གཤིས་འགྱུར་མེད་ཆོས་སྐུ་ཉག་གཅིག་ཀློང་། །
shi gyurmé chöku nyak chik long
The basic nature is unchanging—the single sphere of dharmakāya.
གདངས་འགག་མེད་ལོངས་སྐུའི་གསལ་ཆ་ཅན། །
dang gakmé longkü selcha chen
Its radiance is unimpeded—the clarity of sambhogakāya.
རྩལ་སྣ་ཚོགས་འཆར་བ་དབྱིངས་སུ་ཐིམ། །
tsel natsok charwa ying su tim
Its potency, expressed in myriad ways, has dissolved into basic space,
འདིར་སྣང་ཐམས་ཅད་སྒྱུ་མ་རྨི་ལམ་ལྟར་ཤར་སོང་། །
dir nang tamché gyuma milam tar shar song
and all these appearances arise as illusions or dreams.
འཁོར་འདས་གཉིས་འཛིན་བཅིངས་པའི་དྲི་མ་དང་བྲལ་སོང་། །
khor dé nyidzin chingpé drima dang drel song
I am freed from the enclosing stains of samsara-nirvana duality;
ཡ་གི་ཟངས་མདོག་དཔལ་རིའི་རེ་དོགས་དང་བྲལ་སོང་། །
yagi zangdok pelri ré dok dang drel song
freed from the hope and fear of a Copper-Colored Mountain above;
མ་གི་ན་རག་དམྱལ་བའི་རེ་དོགས་དང་བྲལ་སོང་། །
magi narak nyelwé ré dok dang drel song
freed from the hope and fear of the deepest hells below.
ཀུན་རྫོབ་ཕྱི་ཡི་བླ་མས་དབང་བཞི་ཡི་བསྐུར་དུས། །
kündzop chi yi lamé wang zhi yi kur dü
As the relative outer guru bestowed the four empowerments,
དོན་དམ་ནང་གི་བླ་མ་སྙིང་དབུས་སུ་མཇལ་སོང་། །
döndam nang gi lama nying ü su jel song
I met the ultimate inner guru in the core of my heart.
རིག་པ་ཀ་དག་ཆོས་སྐུ་རྩ་བླ་དེ་དྲན་བྱུང་། །
rikpa kadak chöku tsala dé dren jung
I recalled the dharmakāya root guru, ever-pure awareness.
རང་བཞིན་གསལ་ཆ་ལོངས་སྐུའི་བླ་མ་དེ་དྲན་བྱུང་། །
rangzhin selcha longkü lama dé dren jung
I recalled the sambhogakāya guru, the luminous nature.
ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཆུ་ཟླ་ལྟར་སྣང་སྤྲུལ་སྐུ་དེ་དྲན་བྱུང་། །
tukjé chuda tar nang trülku dé dren jung
I recalled the nirmaṇakāya guru, the manifold capacity, shining like a moon reflected in water.
སྐུ་གསུམ་རང་ཆས་ལྷུན་གྲུབ་ཡབ་རྗེ་ཁྱེད་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །
kusum rangché lhündrup yapjé khyé khyen no
Sublime father, natural spontaneous presence of the three kāyas, watch over me!
གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ་ཨོ་ཌཱི་ཡ་ན་མཁྱེན། །
sölwa depso odiyana khyen
To you I pray—Uḍḍiyāna, watch over me!
གདུང་བས་འབོད་དོ་དྲིན་ཆེན་རྩ་བླ་མཁྱེན། །
dungwé bödo drinchen tsala khyen
To you I call out with longing—gracious root guru, watch over me!
སྐལ་མེད་བདག་ལ་རེ་ས་ཁྱེད་ལས་མེད། །
kelmé dak la resa khyé lé mé
I, so unworthy, have no source of hope but you.
དགོངས་དབྱིངས་དབྱེར་མེད་འདྲེས་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །
gong ying yermé drepar jin gyi lop
Bless me, that basic space and realization may become inseparable.
རྟོགས་པའི་ཉི་མ་འཆར་བར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །
tokpé nyima charwar jin gyi lop
Bless me, that the sun of realization may dawn within.
འཁོར་འདས་དབྱེར་མེད་རྟོགས་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །
khor dé yermé tokpar jin gyi lop
Bless me, that I may realize that samsara and nirvana are indivisible.
སྣང་སེམས་དབྱེར་མེད་འདྲེས་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །
nang sem yermé drepar jin gyi lop
Bless me, that appearances and mind may merge inseparably.
རིག་སྟོང་རྗེན་པར་ཤར་བར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །
riktong jenpar sharwar jin gyi lop
Bless me, that empty awareness may dawn nakedly.
བདེ་སྟོང་ཟུང་འཇུག་རྟོགས་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །
detong zungjuk tokpar jin gyi lop
Bless me, that I may realize the unity of emptiness and bliss.
འཇའ་ལུས་འཕོ་ཆེན་ཐོབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །
jalü pochen topar jin gyi lop
Bless me, that I may attain the rainbow body of great transference.
སྙིང་དབུས་པདྨས་ཁེབ་པའི་ཞིང་དེར་དྲོངས། །
nying ü pemé khepé zhing der drong
Lead me to the Lotus-Covered Realm in the depths of my heart!
རྒྱལ་སྲས་སེམས་དཔའ་པདྨའི་མྱུ་གུ་ནི། །
gyelsé sempa pemé nyugu ni
The son of the victorious ones, bodhisattva Lotus Essence,
གཏེར་ཆེན་མཆོག་གྱུར་བདེ་ཆེན་ཞིག་པོ་གླིང་། །
terchen chokgyur dechen zhikpo ling
is manifest as the great treasure revealer, Chokgyur Dechen Zhikpo Lingpa,
མཉམ་བཞག་ཆོས་འཆད་བདུད་རྩི་ཀ་པ་ལ། །
nyamzhak chöché dütsi kapala
his hands in the mudras of equipoise and expounding the Dharma, holding a skullcup filled with amrita;
རིག་གྲོལ་འགགས་མེད་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ལྷུན་གྱིས་གྲུབ། །
rik dröl gakmé tukjé lhün gyi drup
his awareness free and unobstructed, his compassion ever-present.
པདྨས་ཁེབ་པའི་ཞིང་དེར་སྐྱེ་བར་ཤོག །
pemé khepé zhing der kyewar shok
May I be reborn in his Lotus-Covered Realm!
ཆུ་མོ་ལུག་ལོ་བོད་ཟླ་༧ ཚེས་༢༤ རེས་གཟའ་སྤེན་པའི་ཐོ་རངས་རྩ་གསུམ་ཚེ་ཟབ་བསྙེན་པའི་སྐབས་ཡབ་རྗེ་དམ་པ་ཀརྨ་ཨོ་རྒྱན་ཚེ་དབང་མཆོག་སྔར་རྫོགས་ཆེན་ཀུན་བཟང་ཐུགས་ཏིག་སྨིན་གྲོལ་དབང་དང་ཁྲེག་ཆོད་ལྟ་བའི་སྐོར་དང་ཐོད་རྒལ་རིག་པའི་རྩལ་དབང་སྐབས་སྣང་བཞི་འཆར་ཚུལ་སྐོར་གསུང་སྐབས་དྲན་བཞིན་པས་གང་ཤར་ཐོལ་བྱུང་དུ་བྲིས་པའོ། །
At daybreak on Saturday, the 25th day of the 7th Tibetan month in the Water Sheep year, while engaged in the approach for the Profundity of Longevity of the Three Roots, I remembered my sublime father, the supreme Karma Urgyen Tsewang. I recalled how he had bestowed the ripening and liberating empowerments of The Heart Essence of Samantabhadra (Künzang Tuktik) of the Great Perfection, how he had explained the view of cutting-through, and how, when bestowing the empowerment of awareness’ expression for direct crossing, he had talked about the way the four visions arise. While so recalling, I directly wrote down these words as they came to me.
ཅེས་པའང་སྔ་འགྱུར་བཀའ་གཏེར་རིང་ལུགས་ལ་དད་པའི་ཆ་ཙམ་འཛིན་པ་ཚང་རིགས་སྔགས་འཆང་མིང་ཙམ་འཛིན་པ་ཁོ་བོ་རྩི་ཀེ་མཚོག་གླིང་སྐྱེ་སྤྲུལ་བཞི་པ་མི་འགྱུར་བདེ་བའི་རྡོ་རྗེ་ནས་བྲིས་པའོ།། །།
As for myself, I am someone who has simply achieved some faith in the long-standing Oral (Kama) and Treasure (Terma) lineages of the Ancient Translations—a mantradhara of the Tsangsar clan merely in name, Mingyur Dewey Dorje, the fourth incarnation of Tsikey Chokling.

- ↑ Guru Chökyi Wangchuk (gu ru chos kyi dbang phyug), also known as Guru Chöwang (1212-1270). He was the second of five sovereign terma revealers, and a speech emanation of King Trisong Deutsen. Among his revelations is the practice of Lama Sangdü.
- ↑ Lhalung Pelgyi Dorjé (lha lung dpal gyi rdo rje), one of the twenty-five disciples of Guru Rinpoche. He is responsible for killing the evil King Langdarma, thereby liberating him, and putting an end to the persecution of Buddhism in Tibet. He attained rainbow body at the end of his life.
