The Concise Preliminary Practices

for the Guru’s Heart Practice, Dispeller of All Obstacles (Lamé Tukdrup Barché Künsel)

arranged by Tulku Urgyen Rinpoché

Namo guru padmākaraye!

Herein lies the heart extract of Great Orgyen, Glorious Knower of the Three Times. It is unique among all the treasures buried in the land of Tibet. The person who wishes to attain the swift fruition of unity by means of the two profound stages of the Guru’s Heart Practice, Dispeller of All Obstacles should first of all, as the common preliminaries, arouse intense renunciation, faith, and great compassion, and thereby thoroughly cultivate the field of their mindstream.

You should then exert yourself in sowing the seeds of the uncommon preliminaries, the following five practices: (I) going for refuge, the root of the path to liberation; (II) arousing the heart of awakening (bodhicitta), the essence of the path to omniscience; (III) the meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva, which purifies adverse conditions, misdeeds, and obscurations; (IV) the mandala offering, which perfects the accumulations, the conducive conditions; and (V) training in the guru yoga of blessings, the consummate practice of the Vajrayāna path.

I & II. Refuge and Bodhicitta

Visualize the objects of refuge vividly present in the space before you. Imagine that, in their presence, you and all sentient beings go for refuge and arouse bodhicitta wholeheartedly through your three gates.

namo༔ dak dang khanyam semchen malü kün༔

Namo༔ I and all beings, infinite as space,༔

take refuge in the supreme sources of refuge.

mön dang jukpé changchup semkyé né༔

Rousing the bodhicitta of aspiration and application,

ku sum lamé gopang drupar gyi༔

I will accomplish the level of the three-kāya guru.

Recite that as much as you can. Then, imagine that light rays streaming from the objects of refuge purify all misdeeds and obscurations, for yourself and all others.

III. The Meditation and Recitation of Vajrasattva

First, the visualization of the deity, the power of support:

ah༔ dak gi chiwor pedé teng༔

Āḥ༔ Above my head, upon a lotus and moon disc,༔

sangyé kün gyi yeshé ku༔

sits the wisdom form of all the buddhas,༔

dorjé sempa dewa ché༔

Vajrasattva of great bliss.

drimé tönké dawé dang༔

He is stainless as the glow of the autumn moon.

chak nyi dorjé drilbu nam༔

His two hands, clasping a vajra and bell,

rang ö nyema gyepar tril༔

joyfully embrace Vajragarvā, his own light.

dar dang rinchen gyen gyi dzé༔

Adorned with silks and jewel ornaments,

zhap zung dorjé kyiltrung gi༔

his two legs in vajra posture,༔

ja zer tiklé long na zhuk༔

he is seated amid a swirl of spheres, rainbows, and lights.

Visualize like that. Preceded by the power of remorse—an intense regret for one’s misdeeds and downfalls—engage in the power of the applied antidote, the visualization for reciting the mantra:

tukar dawé kyilkhor ü༔

In the center of the moon disc in his heart

deshek kün gyi tuk sok hum༔

is hūṃ [ཧཱུྃ], the life-force of all the sugatas,༔

yigé gyapé ngak kyi kor༔

encircled by the hundred-syllable mantra.

depé ö trö dön nyi jé༔

As I chant, light rays stream out, fulfilling the twofold goal.

tsur dü dütsi chu gyün bap༔

As they gather back, a stream of amrita descends.

rang gi tsangpé go né zhuk༔

It enters through the crown of my head,

dik drip nyamchak kün jang né༔

purifying misdeeds and obscurations, and vows both damaged and broken,༔

dak ching drima mepar gyur༔

and I become immaculate and pure.

Imagine that, while reciting the mantra as many times as you can:

om bendza sato samaya༔ manu palaya༔ bendza sato tenopa༔ tishta dridho mé bhava༔ sutoyo mé bhava༔ supoyo mé bhava༔ anurakto mé bhava༔ sarva siddhi mé prayatsa༔ sarva karma sutsamé༔ tsittam shri yam kuru hung༔ ha ha ha ha ho༔ bhagaven sarva tathagata bendza ma mé muntsa༔ bendzi bhava maha samaya sato a༔

oṃ vajrasattva samayam༔ anupālaya༔ vajrasattvatvenopatiṣṭha༔ dṛdho me bhava༔ sutoṣyo me bhava༔ supoṣyo me bhava༔ anurakto me bhava༔ sarva-siddhiṃ me prayaccha༔ sarva-karmasu ca me༔ cittaṃ śreyaṃ kuru hūṃ༔ ha ha ha ha hoḥ༔ bhagavān sarva-tathāgata-vajra ma me muñca༔ vajrī bhava mahāsamaya sattva āḥ༔

Then, recite the following mantra as much as is suitable:

om benza sato ah༔

oṃ vajrasattva āḥ༔

At the end, say:

gönpo dak ni mi shé mongpa yi༔

Protector, due to my ignorance and lack of understanding,

damtsik lé ni gel zhing nyam༔

I have transgressed and violated my samayas.

lama gönpö kyap dzö chik༔

Guru and protector, please grant me refuge!

tsowo dorjé dzinpa ni༔

Sovereign vajra holder,

tukjé chenpö daknyi chen༔

Embodiment of great compassion,

drowé tso la dak kyap chi༔

king of beings, to you I go for refuge.༔

Then always say:

ku sung tuk tsawa dang yenlak gi damtsik nyamchak tamché töl zhing shak so, dikdrip nyetung drimé tsok tamché jang zhing dakpar dzé du söl

I openly admit all the damaged and broken root and branch samayas of body, speech, and mind. I beseech you, please cleanse and purify all my misdeeds, obscurations, downfalls, and stains!

zhé sölwa tapé lama dorjé sempa gyé shing dzumpa dang chepé rik kyi bu khyö kyi dikdrip nyetung tamché dakpa yin no

My supplicating in this way delights Guru Vajrasattva. With smiling face he says, “Child of noble family, all of your misdeeds and obscurations are purified.”

zhé nangwa jin ching ö du zhu né rang la timpé rang nyi kyang pel dorjé sempé kur gyur

Thus absolving me, he melts into light, dissolves into me, and I myself become the wisdom form of glorious Vajrasattva.

Thus, imagine that all your misdeeds and obscurations are purified and that damaged and broken samayas are mended.

IV. Mandala Offering

Prepare the mandala plate of precious metals, the perfumed water, the material for the heaps, and so forth. Then, physically arrange the parts, and with your speech recite:

om ah hum༔ kham sum nöchü peljor dang༔

Oṃ āḥ hūṃ༔ The three realms, environment and inhabitants, all richness and splendor,༔

dak lü longchö getsok kün༔

my body, possessions, and each and every virtue,༔

tukjé daknyi nam la bül༔

I offer to the embodiments of compassion.

zhé né jin gyi lap tu söl༔

Accept them all and bestow your blessings, I pray.

om sarva tathagata retna mandala pudza hoh༔

oṃ sarva tathāgata ratna maṇḍala pūjā hoḥ༔

To mentally send out and offer Mount Sumeru, the four continents, and the riches of gods and humans in quantities equal to the number of atoms in the universe is to offer the outer mandala. To offer your own aggregates, elements, and sense bases, along with all your dearly held pleasures, is to offer the inner mandala. To seal all these with the view of not conceptualizing the three spheres is to offer the secret mandala. Offer all three together simultaneously, numerous times, and at the end dissolve the whole field of accumulation into yourself.

V. Guru Yoga

This has three parts.

A. Externally, Practicing in the Manner of Supplication

With one-pointed devotion say:

rang dün namkhar chötrin gyatsö ü༔

Amid an ocean of offering clouds in the sky before me,༔

sengtri pema nyida tsekpé teng༔

on a lion throne stacked with a lotus, sun, and moon,༔

kyapné kündü orgyen tötreng tsel༔

is Orgyen Tötreng Tsel, embodiment of all refuge objects.

zhel chik chak nyi tro dzum zi öbar༔

With his one face, two arms, and wrathful smile, he glows with splendor.

pé zha sangpö chögö zap ber söl༔

He wears the lotus crown, inner gown, Dharma robes, and cloak of brocade.

chak yé dorjé yönpé töbum nam༔

His right hand holds a vajra, his left a skull cup and vase,

sangwé chakgya betsül khatvang khyü༔

and he embraces his secret mudra concealed as a trident.

zhap nyi röl tap jatsön ö ngé long༔

He sits with his two legs in reveling posture amid five-colored rainbow light.

rapjam tsawa sum gyi trinpung tro༔

Boundless cloudbanks of the Three Roots stream forth from him.

nangsi pelden lamé ngowor gyur༔

All phenomenal appearance is the essence of the glorious guru.

Visualize that, and then, in order to receive the blessings, repeat the following supplication many times, with intense, heartfelt devotion:

dü sum sangyé guru rinpoché༔

Buddha of the three times, Guru Rinpoché,

ngödrup kün dak dewa chenpö zhap༔

lord of all siddhis, Great Bliss,༔

barché kün sel düdul drakpo tsal༔

dispeller of all obstacles, Wrathful Tamer of Māra—༔

sölwa depso jin gyi lap tu söl༔

I supplicate you, bestow your blessings.

chi nang sangwé barché zhiwa dang༔

Pacify the outer, inner, and secret obstacles

sampa lhün gyi drupar jingyi lop༔

and spontaneously fulfill all wishes.

B. Internally, Practicing in the Manner of Recitation, Together with Taking Empowerment

By virtue of your supplication, rainbows, lights, and bindus—countless as dust motes in a sunbeam, and all taking the shapes of deities, seed syllables, and implements—emerge from the three places of each of the gathered deities and dissolve into you. By that, you obtain every empowerment, blessing, and siddhi, without exception. While imagining that, recite:

om ah hum benza guru pema siddhi hum༔

oṃ āḥ hūṃ vajra guru padma siddhi hūṃ༔

When concluding the session, the retinue of the Three Roots dissolves into the great master of Uḍḍiyāna, the guru who embodies all objects of refuge. From his four places, white, red, dark blue, and multicolored light rays stream forth, dissolve into you, and thereby you attain the four empowerments. Imagining that, say:

palden lamé ku yi né zhi né༔

From the four places of the glorious guru’s form

özer jungwa dak gi né zhir tim༔

light rays emerge and dissolve into my four places.

ku sung tuk dang yeshé dorjé yi༔

Blessed by his vajra form, speech, heart, and wakefulness,

jin gyi lap né wang zhi topar gyur༔

I obtain the four empowerments.

C. Secretly, Practicing the Ultimate Guru Yoga of Simplicity in the Manner of Activity Application

lama orgyen chenpo nyi༔

The great master of Uḍḍiyāna

gyépa chenpö rang la tim༔

with great joy dissolves into me.

rang yang kunzhi machöpé༔

In the state of the unfabricated all-ground,

ngang la yi ni dzinpa dral༔

my mind, free from fixation༔

namdak trödral chökyi ku༔

is the pure dharmakāya devoid of constructs.

Recite and imagine that. Then look into the natural face of innate empty awareness, devoid of mental constructs of the past, present, and future. Connecting with this, then either train in the paths of the main practice, generation and completion, or, if it is time to enter your daily activities, say:

ho༔ rikdzin lamé kyilkhor drupé tü༔

Hoḥ༔ By accomplishing the mandala of the vidyādhara guru,༔

dak dang tayé semchen malü kün༔

may I and all infinite sentient beings༔

trinlé nam zhi lhün gyi drupa dang༔

spontaneously fulfill the four awakened activities༔

ösal chökü ying su drolwar shok༔

and be liberated into the basic space of luminous dharmakāya!

tsa gyü lamé jinlap nying la zhuk༔

May the blessings of the root and lineage gurus enter my heart!

yidam khandro lü dang drip zhin drok༔

May the yidams and ḍākinīs accompany me like a shadow follows its body!

chökyong sungmé barché kün sal né༔

May the Dharma protectors and guardians dispel all obstacles!

choktün ngödrup drupé trashi shok༔

May there be the auspiciousness of attaining the supreme and common siddhis!

Thus fully dedicate the roots of virtue to supreme awakening. Seal the practice with perfect and pure aspirations, and train in passing the time in all your breaks with activities that accord with the Dharma.
