The Essence of the Two Accumulations:The Ritual for the Elaborate Outer Practice1
From the mind treasure cycle The Profound Essence of Tārā
Namo Gurvyā Āryatārāyai!
In honor of Tārā, mother to the guides
and their offspring in all three times,
she who has wonderful resolve and activity,
here, in her honor, I set out the practice according to Kriyā and Caryā.
Since this Profound Essence is a condensation of every quintessential profundity, it is not necessary to resort to much elaboration. Nevertheless there are two degrees of detail: one slightly elaborate and the other as a daily practice.
Elaborate Practice Instructions
For the first, in front of a painting or statue of the noble Lady Tārā, or whatever image of the Three Jewels you can acquire, arrange, on a clean surface, the two waters, the general offerings, the round white torma, the cleansing water, the offering mandala, grain for tossing, and other articles. If you can, keep the conduct of bathing and cleanliness. If unable to do that, at least perform the practice when you have not consumed meat or alcohol, such as in the morning. With an attitude of renunciation and bodhicitta, recite these verses of refuge and bodhicitta:
Refuge and bodhicitta
dün gyi namkhar jetsünma ngönsum zhukpar gyur
In the sky before me, Noble Tārā is present in actuality.

Zangchö Mönlam’s Seven Branch Prayer
Next recite the Seven Branch Prayer:
1. Prostration
To all the buddhas, the lions of men,
dü sum shekpa mi yi sengé kün
in all directions of the universe, through past and present and future:

to every single one of you, I bow in homage;
lü dang ngak yi dangwé chak gyi-o
devotion fills my body, speech, and mind.
zangpo chöpé mönlam top dak gi
Through the power of this prayer, aspiring to good action,
gyelwa tamché yi kyi ngönsum du
all the victorious ones appear, vivid before my mind,

and around them, all their bodhisattva heirs,

and so I imagine them filling completely

inspired by my devotion to all the buddhas, and

moved by the power of my faith in Good Actions—
gyelwa kün la chaktsel chöpar gyi
I prostrate and offer to all you victorious ones.
3. Confession

Whatever negative acts I have committed,

while driven by desire, hatred, and ignorance,

This ritual liturgy was arranged by Jamgön Guṇa.7
The main sādhana was translated according to the wish of Kyapjé Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, by Erik Pema Kunsang at Nangkyi Gompa, Spring 2002, with the help of Marcia Binder Schmidt, Graham Sunstein, Michael Tweed, and Shenpen Lhamo. It was further improved at Rangjung Yeshe Gomdé, USA, 2007 with the help of Lama Sherab Dorje and Joanne Larson. It was later reworked by Lea Ortet and the Khenpos at Pulihari, Nepal. The Seven-Branch Offering is from the Zangchö Mönlam, translated by Rigpa Translations. Additional edits were added by Stefan Mang. And the whole translation was finalized by Marcia, 2020, after the Venerable Sean Price looked at it. Verses marked by an asterisk * were translated by Lhasey Lotsawa. Spelling and phonetics adjusted to Lhasey Lotsawa style.
